Children learn by playing together. At Salem Lutheran Preschool, that's the heart of what we do. We are a Christian-based preschool, established in 1978, and we welcome children of all faiths. Our purpose is to promote healthy emotional and social development through cooperative play, in an atmosphere of love, caring and understanding.
Walk into a room and you'll see blocks, puzzles, books, and art supplies within easy reach. Children gather at tables for projects, then move to open floor space for building and games. Teachers kneel at eye level, ask questions, and let children try things themselves. When a child needs help, an adult is close by. Over the year, children learn to share, take turns, and use words with friends.
We were established in 1978. The same purpose has held since then: healthy emotional and social development among preschool children through cooperative play, in an atmosphere of love, caring and understanding. What you notice in practice
Teachers drop to the children's eye level and join the play already happening. They follow a child's lead, then add an idea or a question. Small groups let every child be seen. Cooperative play is the work of the room.
The room is set up in zones: a block corner, a book nook, a table for art, and a rug for group time. Children choose where to start and move as they finish. The day flows from free play to circle to snack to outside time, with cleanup in between. The schedule stays predictable, so children know what comes next.
How we work with families
At pickup, teachers share what your child did that day. They may mention a new friendship, a tower that stayed up, or a song your child sang at circle time. If you have a question, ask a teacher at drop-off or pickup, or call the office during the week. We want you to know how your child's day went.
The first weeks of preschool are a big change. We take them slowly. You can tell your child's teacher what helps at home, and we'll do the same here. Some children jump right in; others need a little more time. We stay in touch about how it's going. You can ask us any questions as your child settles in.
